Laid-Off New Yorker Moved Back in With Parents and Says It Saved Her Career Reset
After months of job hunting drained her savings, she traded NYC costs for family support in New England and used the time to rebuild her mental health.
A woman laid off from her corporate job in New York City in 2023 says she eventually moved back in with her parents in the New England suburbs after months of unsuccessful job hunting, according to Business Insider. By 2024, facing the choice between continuing to drain her savings in an expensive city or moving home, she chose to leave in January 2025.
She says the layoff revealed how much her mental health had suffered at her old job, including anxiety and hives, and that moving back home gave her space to rebuild her confidence and rethink what success means to her, rather than continuing to spend down savings while unemployed in NYC.
