Woman who retired at 58 with $500,000 went back to work, then quit again at 67
Misty Miller called her first retirement a mistake after overspending and losing her sense of purpose, before finding stability the second time around.
Misty Miller retired in 2017 at 58 with $500,000 saved after working her way up to staff services manager at the California Housing Finance Agency, according to Business Insider. She later called that retirement her biggest mistake: she missed having a sense of purpose, overspent, and grew afraid she would run out of money and outlive her savings.
Miller said she was "house-rich and cash-poor," with inflation eating into her income even though about 75% of her medical expenses were covered. She went back to work before retiring a second time at 67, a move that followed a shift in mindset rather than a change in finances.
Now Miller says she's doing better than she expected, feeling lively with a clear mind and fewer worries, and has filled her time with social activities and plans to write a children's book.
