Waymo Plans Driverless Taxi Launch in Singapore by 2028
The expansion marks the company's fourth country and its first tied to a formal labor agreement.
Waymo announced plans to launch a fully autonomous, all-electric ride-hailing service in Singapore by 2028, working with the country's Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority, according to TheStreet.
The announcement, made Friday, September 18, marks the fourth country for Alphabet's autonomous driving unit, following earlier expansions into London, Tokyo and Munich.
Waymo has reported more than 20 million fully autonomous rides and over 300 million fully autonomous kilometers driven, with a 94% reduction in injury-causing crashes compared with human drivers in the U.S. cities where it operates without anyone behind the wheel.
The Singapore launch is reportedly the first instance of a government attaching a labor condition in writing to its invitation for Waymo to operate, according to the outlet.
