Woman's $60,000 Social Security Deposit Turns Out To Be Years Of Back Pay

A financial planner says the SSDI recipient's unexplained windfall likely reflects a correction to years of miscalculated benefits.

A Social Security Disability Insurance recipient received an unexplained $60,000 deposit from the Social Security Administration, prompting her family to question whether it was a mistake, according to a Reddit post relayed by Money.com. The deposit came about three months after her monthly SSDI payment had unexpectedly doubled, with the agency unable to explain either change when the family called.

Carter McClung, director of financial planning at Blue Rock Financial Group, said the lump sum is "very likely legitimate" and probably reflects a combination of corrected primary SSDI benefits and retroactive payment of dependent benefits the recipient was never paid. He noted SSDI amounts are calculated from a formula based on past earnings, and miscalculations aren't uncommon. After the deposit arrived, the family called again and learned the agency is supposed to review beneficiaries' accounts every six months and adjust payments as needed — a review the family believes had been overdue.
